The first day of the Cheltenham Festival 2020, billed as Champion Day, also features the Arkle Chase, which crowns the champion two-mile novice chaser, while the feature race on Day One is the Champion Hurdle, which over the years has been won by the likes of Dawn Run and Brave Inca.

12/1 Daily Tip winner

12/1 Daily Tip winner

The 4.40 Southwell certainly proved that old adage that drifters do win. Tipped at 6/1 the night before, course specialist Riddlestown won at an SP of 12/1 to put our Community Members nicely in profit for the day, after our other tip came 2nd. Just a pound on our tip would have paid for a subscription for the whole month. That’s right, to join our Community costs just £12 per month. Check out all the benefits and sign up by clicking the button below.

Here’s what we posted in the Members’ Area at 7pm on Monday evening and emailed to Community Members on Tuesday morning.

4.40 SOUTHWELL – 1PT WIN – RIDDLESTOWN @ 6/1 (General) BOG
Riddlestown looks a big price here against some very modest animals, many of which have never been within a sniff of victory. With five wins to his name at the track and 9 career wins in total he is the outstanding candidate for the race. He knows his job and that will be half the battle here in this hands and heels contest with no whips allowed. He also won the race last year from a 4lbs lower mark. Riddlestown must defy top weight here but I think he is overpriced based upon his credentials in comparison to his modest rivals.

Read Will’s insightful analysis of Dubai Turf Sponsored By DP World (Group 1):

Dubai Turf Sponsored By DP World (Group 1) (3.40)
A well up to standard Group 1 and deeply contested. The choice between Zarak and Ribchester is a hard one but the trip and a local prep give the favorite the vote. Brilliantly bred (Dubawi-Zarkava), he endured a slightly frustrating three year old career but it’s worth remembering that he was second twice to Almanzor in the Prix-Du Jockey Club and then the d’Ornano at Deauville and he had the trip against him in the Moulin and was given plenty to do in the Dollar. His reappearance win in the Dubai Millennium suggested he’d had a good winter and this nine-furlong trip will be perfect for him. Ribchester had a phenomenal campaign last year but he did need his first run last year in the Prix Dejbel last year. Mutakaayef missed his intended prep for this which is a worry for all that he’s got a big form chance; Decorated Knight was impressive in the Jebel Hatta but it was a poor renewal so one is counting on more improvement there. Deauville could get the better of Mondialiste (the two were separated by half a length in the Arlington Million) over this shorter trip and the pair have to be considered here. Cougar Mountain has come up short at Group 1 level and Long Island sound was behind Deauville when the two last met at Belmont so more is needed. The Japanese have a fine record here and it is interesting to note that Vivlos, a winner of the Sukha Sho at Kyoto last October, used the same prep race that Just A Way (2014) and Real Steel (2016) used as a springboard here and it is unlikely that Joao Moriera will be giving her as much to do as Hiroyucki Uchida did in the Nakyama Kinen. The form of that success needs to be improved on a tad but she looks woefully overpriced. Heshem beat Zarak in what was a good classic season for him and his decent prep run should see him perfectly set up for this, so each/way support would be no surprise.

Advice: 1 pt win Zarak (5/2 general), 1 pt each/way Vivlos (25/1 general)

NOVICES HANDICAP CHASE PREVIEW AND TIPS

March 7, 2017 by Oliver Wagner

NOVICES HANDICAP CHASE PREVIEW AND TIPS

There’s one week to go until the Cheltenham Festival 2017 and here’s a review of the Novices Handicap Chase on Day 1.

Foxtail Hill 8/1 (140) – Was getting chunks of weight from Saphir Du Rheu when scoring at Cheltenham last time. However, that was still a very useful performance from a novice against experienced opposition and he is clearly very progressive. He jumped left all the way round at Kempton previously and still won with a tonne in hand. He looks the ideal type for the race as he is straight forward, jumps extremely well and will just get on with the job out in front. He is one to take very seriously for local trainer Nigel Twiston Davies and will be very difficult to peg back if allowed to dictate.

Value At Risk 10/1 (138) – Couldn’t back it with counterfeit money. A very well regarded animal and achieved a good deal over hurdles but lost his way some time ago and simply isn’t a very good jumper. He is one from four over the larger obstacles having fallen twice and beat absolutely nothing in a four runner race the last day at Doncaster. I cannot understand why he is so prominent in the betting as his chance doesn’t even compare to Foxtail Hill who brings a better level of form and significantly better jumping ability to the table.

Gold Present 16/1 (137) – He was disappointing at Kempton on Boxing Day which JP and I attended, but prior to that and subsequently he put in useful performances. He ran a big race last time out at Kempton when chasing home the 150+ rated Frodon in receipt of just 1lb. He was also very impressive on his chasing debut at Doncaster. If we forgive him the run over Christmas then he holds every chance here if stepping up again on his most recent performance. He will have learnt a lot last time out when he wandered around in the closing stages but jumped well throughout.

Two Taffs 16/1 (137) – Has flattered to deceive too many times for my liking. He ran a decent second behind a smart type at Kempton on Boxing Day but he isn’t one who I would want on my side in this type of race. Everything needs to fall right for him to get his head in front and I’m far more inclined to be with a more progressive type that has actually managed to win over the larger obstacles.

Romain De Senam 10/1 (137) – If we wind the clock back 12 months then he has the outstanding piece of form in the race having finished a close second in the Fred Winter, a race which has worked out very well with Diego Du Charmil, Coo Star Sivola and Missy Tata having progressed nicely and Campeador having threatened to hack up over in Ireland before falling at the last again. If he can translate that level of form to chasing in this race then he is the one to beat. We haven’t seen enough this season to suggest that is likely but I just have a gut feeling that Paul Nicholls will bring him right on the day and the step up in trip could bring about significant improvement given the way he flew up the hill last season. He could be the big danger to Foxtail Hill turning for home if staying within striking distance.

Brother Tedd 14/1 (136) – Looks very well treated on his best hurdles form having been rated 155 at his peak over the smaller obstacles. However, he hasn’t won any of his four chase starts and it has to be a concern that he simply isn’t as good over fences. He also hasn’t won a race for the best part of 18 months and must defy at absence of nearly 100 days.

Squouateur 14/1 (135) – Cannot have this one for love nor money. Five starts over fences and has been beaten on each occasion. Was well fancied for the Martin Pipe last season but ran flat and/or got outpaced. Has a bucket load to prove and hard to justify its position towards the head of the market.

Recommended Bets

2 PTS WIN FOXTAIL HILL @ 8/1 (General) NRNB BOG

1 PT WIN ROMAIN DE SENAM @ 10/1 (General) NRNB BOG

Check out details of our Free and Community Membership.

Although 20 runners will line up here it will be a very compressed handicap with little between top and bottom weight making the assignment more straight forward in terms of picking the winner. For me there are two horses with standout claims above the others. Foxtail Hill was extremely impressive when beating more experienced rivals such as Saphir Du Rheu at Cheltenham last time. He jumps superbly and will be front rank from the start affords the advantages of not needing luck in running and avoiding any mistakes from his fellow novices. From what we have seen it will take a really smart one to peg him back and if he is allowed to dictate the race at his own pace then he is going to take the world of beating. Romain De Senam will likely give him most to think about in the closing stages if he can stay within striking distance. There is nobody better than Paul Nicholls to prepare a novice chaser for the festival and his Fred Winter form from last season’s festival looks very decent.

Will’s Wisdom – Betfair Super Saturday preview

February 9, 2017 by William Kedjanyi

Will’s Wisdom – Betfair Super Saturday preview

Hi all, William here. The column took a break last weekend but to thank all for their patience and to show potential new members what they could get, here’s a preview of the key races at  Newbury this Saturday. More selections will be coming too, and lots more content. Thanks for all who have joined so far, please spread the word – https://jpfestival.com/membership – and enjoy!

Ladies and gentlemen, the clock is ticking.

At the time you read this there are no more than 31 days until that spine-tingling roar of the runners being sent for the Supreme and whilst this writer is never too keen to start looking at racing through a prism of four days in March, now is the time.

The trials have been well and truly underway for a little while and this weekend is hugely consequential, with not only Newbury’s Super Saturday but a fine card at Warwick and also the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown.

The Betfair Hurdle (3.35), Europe’s richest handicap hurdle, is a fine contest in itself although it ought to provide plenty of context on the form of Moon Racer, one of the leading contenders to the bookmakers for the Supreme.

Paul Nicholls’ Movewithetimes was fifth behind Moon Racer in that November Grade 2 when beaten three and a half lengths, although everything that could go wrong did go wrong for him. A twice raced (and unbeaten) novice at the time, the farcical early pace unsettled him most of all from the six who were there that day as he pulled his head off and afterwards he found no gap on the nearside rail before that last at the crucial stage of the race and he lost all chance there. A nice win a month afterwards should have bought him on a little and he’s surely underrated off his mark of 136 so it’s understandable that he’s popular.

Ballyandy was just ahead of him that day when third, although the Champion Bumper winner has become a tad disappointing to some, since being beaten at Sandown in December (albeit to a fine prospect and subsequent Chellos Hurdle winner in the shape of Messiere Des Obeaux). He was getting 7lbs that day, however, so a rating of 135 looks only fair.

One thing that should be noted is the lack of pace on offer in the 16 runner field, something that would hamper both chances at what is a short pair of prices.

That is the case for Song Light too, but there are reasons still to support him. Seams Mullin’s seven-year-old has not been seen for 90 days but in the shape of his last two efforts he has some of the best form in the field. The former of those was a fine fifth in the Ladbroke Hurdle of 2015 when posted right from the rear in a race where the dead heated first and second pair were prominent all the way. The third (Rennetti) and the fourth (Some Plan) have since made that form look very decent with Rennetti second only to Jezki at Navan latest (and a winner on the flat) and Some Plan now a winner over fences (rated 148). After a good comeback run on the flat he then went to the Greatwood Hurdle, where he once again ran a fine race to be a close third behind North Hill Harvey and Modus. Modus has since won the Lanzarote in fine style and North Hill Harvey had previously been fourth behind Buveur D’Air, Petit Mouchoir, and Limini at Aintree in April. He’s only gone up 3lbs since, this may well have been the plan, and there’s nothing not to like.

Clyne is the most appealing of the favourites. Transformed for Evan Williams this year, the form of the race Nobody Ever Saw at Haydock has been boosted with Le Rocher winning since and Sharp Response and Cooking Fat winning well since. He has since pushed The New One (albeit getting 7lbs) to a length at Haydock but he had L’amI Serge well behind. As a relative front runner in a race where there don’t seem to be many others, he has to be feared here.

William H Bonney improved on his Kempton comeback to take the last at the end of Trials day, when Wait For Me was leading on the run to the last but faded to finish sixth (he was also sixth at Kempton. His jumping has been a constant blight and it may prove to be again. William H Bonney is respected although others appeal as having obviously better claims.

Beltor was second in the Kempton event where Wait for Me and William H Bonney both ran; He probably needs to improve to get involved. Edddiemaurice, who was fifth there, comes into the same category.

De Name Escaped Me is a very interesting contender. Now seven for Noel Meade, he has not been since finishing in midfield in a competitive handicap hurdle at the Punchestown Festival. However, it’s interesting to note that before he had bolted up on his handicap debut and that his previous two wins were over 2 miles on soft ground, In fact, he has only won with cut in the ground and it could well be that. Kayf Blanco, Gassin Golf, Ballyhill and Boite all didn’t appear to be especially well handicapped.

The picture for the Arkle and the Champion Chase has seen more change than arguably any race but the Champion and the picture for the latter could change again following the Game Spirit (3.00).

Arkle favourite Altior, now a presumed Festival banker with the withdrawal of Min thanks to to injury, has his main test here in the shape of facing a decent set of horses. This is headed by Fox Norton, third in the Arkle last year and since a dual winner in deeply impressive fashion at Cheltenham.

This is going to be his first test over fences, although he has now had three outings over the bigger obstacles and the first time he was made to work (even if only briefly) he dismissed Charbel, who had beaten the graded winners Le Preizen and Top Notch beforehand. He did that by six lengths, showing the power that he exuded when he trashed the Supreme Novices’ field by seven lengths. From that field we now have two of the leading contenders for the Champion Hurdle, a Grade 1 winner and also four other winners.  He’s rated 160 but appears even better than that and has some key advantages over his rivals too.

On the second of those occasions he had nine lengths behind him and Simply Ned, with nine more to Special Tiara, leaving him on 167 – enough to be in contention for the big event even if it may not be enough to trouble Douvan. It’s been a shame for the fans that he was injured since, meaning he missed a good few targets, and he must give 5lbs to the field so we will know a lot about how he has recovered.

Garde La Victoire, a good winner of a Sandown Handicap in January, ought to be greatly respected. Another very interesting contender here is Traffic Fluide. A really progressive novice chaser, made an highly promising first appearance of last season in the Sodexo Clarence House Chase, beaten only a short-head by race-fit stablemate Sire De Grugy when the pair were second and third to Un De Sceaux. Not seen since, this is a stiff comeback but he’s retains as much potential as any.

Module and Dodging Bullets don’t look the horses of old whilst Gino Trail looks a little overmatched.

The Gold Cup Picture is more than open to change still and it will on both Saturday and Sunday, first with the Denman Chase (2.25). The five runner field is a select one, and much focus will be on the top pairing although we should look at all the runners. O Manolai, a course and distance winner, won a valuable handicap chaser here before pulling up at Haydock behind Bristol De Mai. Le Mercurey actually beat Bristol De Mai in April when the pair last met, although he was a fresher horse after a shorter season than Nigel Twiston Davies’ charge and since one has run to the same mark and the other has improved.

More Of That, the former World Hurdle winner, is a really interesting contender here. Blood vessel problems have bedeviled him but he has run two fair races since pulling up in the Paddy Power Gold Cup. 2m5f was too short in the Peterborough Chase (or at least it appeared so), and his sixth in the Lexus Chase was a reasonable enough effort. The worry for him is that he can’t handle a battle as he used to because of physical issues.

This may come down to the top two, as the market expects. Bristol De Mai ended a long streak of seconds in spectacular style when he pummelled his field in the Peter Marsh, travelling with the zest and drawing away from his field with the power of a Gold Cup horse. It was a brilliant performance which underlined all of his best qualities, qualities he is likely going to get a chance to show off in a small field like today’s, and with the soft ground also set to suit, there’s plenty in his favour.

His main rival is Native River, the second favourite for the Gold Cup and an ever more popular option as the season has progressed. Second in the National Hunt Chase last year and then a comprehensive winner of the Mildmay Chase afterwards, he put his hat in the potential ring with a gutsy Hennessy victory and then confirmed that with a sensational win in the Welsh National off topweight – like previous Gold Cup winner Carvills Hill. The quality of both races has been bought into contention but the manner of his victories or his form from last year, cannot. It would be more beneficial for him to be in a bigger field perhaps, but he sets the standard here regardless and there’s no effort of his over fences that could be adjusted to be more reliable than anything Bristol De Mai has done. Take the evens.

Advice

2.20 Newbury – 2 pts win Native River (evs general)

3.00 Newbury – 4 pts win Altior (8/11 general)

3.35 Newbury – 1 pt each/way Song Light (10/1 general)

3.35 Newbury – 1 pt win Clyne (5/1 general)

Ripon Preview and Tips – Tuesday 30th August

Ripon Preview and Tips – Tuesday 30th August

Ripon Preview – Tuesday 30th August 2016 – By Geoff Handley, one of our Community Members. You too can join us here.

THEAKSTONS POP-UP BEER FESTIVAL 24TH SEPTEMBER MAIDEN STAKES

This looks like a two horse race between Dawoodi and Colonel Frank.
Dawoodi is trained by Newmarket trainer Hugo Palmer who has 15 winners with his 2 year olds from 75 runners and sends his first youngster to Ripon.Trainer has been most consistent all season.
Finished a good third at Redcar ( backed from 7/2 to 11/4 ) and the runner up, fourth and fifth have all won since, he should come on for his debut run.
Colonel Frank will be the big danger, made his debut at Gt Yarmouth finishing 6th ( two winners have come out of that race ) and then was well backed last time finishing second on the all weather at Wolverhampton. The Newmarket trainer Ed Walker is 0/6 at the course in the last 5 years.
The un-raced Buccaneer’s Cove is from the top yard of Yorkshire trainer Richard Fahey and is worth a watch in the market. (4 winners today from his 15 runners).
The same could be said about the filly Panther In Pink trained locally by Ann Duffield and has PJ McDonald booked.

The other five make little appeal.

SIS HORSES IN-RUNNING NURSERY HANDICAP

17 runners have been declared for this wide open 2yo handicap over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs.
Two Newmarket trained horses will no doubt dominate the market, the Hugo Palmer trained Bithynia though has plenty to prove following his latest run at Beverley and secondly George Margarson trained Miss Rosina who was a plucky runner up at Thirsk ( making all until close home ) and could run well of a handicap mark of 70, has a nice draw in 17, It could pay to lead from the front and Miss Rosina could well do that and lead them all a merry dance.Though the trainer is on the cold list its his first visit to the course for over 8 years.
However, I also like the Yorkshire trained Mama Africa who has ran four times, each time showing a bit of promise, not getting the clearest of runs last time at Carlisle, Should run well off a mark of 66 and at 9/1 is my each way value though I have worries about it drawn 1 as it could pay to be drawn high (often is over the sprint track at Ripon).
As for the other 14 runners, I do like the yard of Jamie Osborne and he sends Big Lachie on the long journey from Upper Lambourn and has top jockey Jamie Doyle booked, Finished a reasonable second at Saturday, he is another well drawn.
Like I said, its an open event.

One from each side of the track, Miss Rosina and Mama Africa.

DAVID CHAPMAN MEMORIAL HANDICAP

This is the best race of the evening and as the betting suggest is wide open.
Not often I tip up an 11yo but hopefully Silvanus can win this 5f sprint, get the feeling he is coming back to form and has dropped to a dangerous handicap mark of 85.
Last time out didn’t get the best of runs at Thirsk but was running on well at the end,Paul Mulrennan rides for North Yorkshire trainer Paul Midgeley.
Imtiyaaz has done nothing this season over 6f but won last season at Ripon over todays distance and going ( good to soft ) and is reunited with the winning jockey Andrea Atzeni for the first time.

13 runners in total.

21 ENGINEER REGIMENT SAPPER HANDICAP

Just the six runners head to post over this 2m trip
I’m very hopeful that the 3yo Silva Eclipse can make it a hat-trick.
A winner last time at Carlisle, the form looks solid as three winners have subsequently come out of that race and a step up in trip should improve him again.Trained by Jedd O’Keefe in  Middleham, the top jockey Paul Mulrennan rides

The danger could be the only other 3yo Kajaki, though not as progressive as Silva Eclipse, the North Yorkshire yard of Kevin Ryan is in great form with 7 winners with their last 19 runners.

SIS TRADING SERVICES FILLIES´ HANDICAP

Hopefully jockey Paul Mulrennan can complete his hat-trick on the evening and also Tanaasub completes her treble too.
She won here at Ripon on her seasonal debut then went on to win at Haydock, travels up from near Newmarket by Robert Cowell. Newmarket raider Cersei is the danger for top trainer David Simcock.

SIS STREAM MAIDEN STAKES
The last race of the day due off at 7.45pm.
Godolphin have their only runner here this evening from Newmarket with Confident Kid, James Doyle rides. Cost half a million as a yearling , ran two promising races this season at Haydock and Pontefract finishing runner up on both occasions, the dogs were barking for this one last year when beaten on his only 2yo start
His big challenger is the the Irish runner Warp Factor who has raced at Hamilton the last five times running in decent company but is probably not as progressive as the Kid.
Big thank to Geoff Handley for this preview and tips! You can follow Geoff on Twitter at @HandleyGeoff.
